In my continuing quest for blog nirvana I’m continuing to fiddle and play. Currently using I’m using a theme based on A List Apart created by Kzenon. It’s kind of minimalist and cool. I’m still looking for this sort of thing with a left hand sidebar, but until I find it, this is the theme I’m working on.
I’ve just added a GeoUrl button to the sidebar. I took Dad’s old GPS outside, got a fix (!) and followed the instructions. Then I discovered that I lived in Glorit. A little thought and I realised that I needed to turn the figures into decimal coordinates. Ah now I’m in Henderson, near Oratia. Far more civilised.
I’ve been toying with the GPS / mapping / coordinates idea for a little while. There are a lot of cool things being done with Google Earth and Google Maps and the various GeoUrl type scripts. How can we translate some of that cool into learning and teaching? How can be use the data (or the finding, extraction and extrapolation of that data) into something more than a cool button for a website?

Nix, I adored your old theme! Now I must learn to love this new one.
Hiya Bonnie,
I prefered it too. But I broke it! It looked awful in IE so until I sort out a fix, I’m playing.
It looks great in Windows I.E., and just a little off in Mac I.E. 5. Nothing really bad! Some sites you can’t even read in Mac I.E.
What I really like about your site is how clean it looks. It’s very readable.
You may have gotten the theme from A List Apart, but you’ve made it your own.
Thanks Bonnie. My Windows laptop is a wide screen and Tangled up in Purple doesn’t look good at 1680 x 1050 in IE. I know that such wide resolutions are still in the minority but I would like everyone to see the same page
The other problem is that the code doesn’t validate – straight out of the box! I really do like this look and so I guess I’ll have to decide if it’s worth it to put the energy in to sort the problems out.
I’ve noticed a lot of themes don’t validate right out of the box. Many of them don’t work in I.E., either.
I haven’t figured out how to create a theme yet, so I’m not complaining!
