Darn. I did it again. I am presently sitting up in bed, typing merrily away on the Mac Powerbook. I’m using Camino, as a browser and I have more than a few windows open.

I had been jumping around the ‘net and landed on the ecto site. Offline blog editor. No, I don’t think that I need to invest in one of those. And so I started a post about interactivity and radio staions being better at it than newspapers and what did I do? I closed my Camino window without saving my post. Arggghhh. I hate it when that happens.

Statement to ponder:

but now it’s as much about conversation as it is about consumption

On my recent travels I’ve been listening to a lot of radio. Radio is way ahead of newspaper because they invite interaction from their listeners. Certainly, it’s on their terms (and I publish this blog on my terms too), but they invite conversation and interaction via several methods. You can text, email or phone some of the bigger stations and you can have your say.

Can you do the same with a newspaper? Or the TV? In all fairness, once the Herald has landed on your dining room table and you’ve spilt coffee on it maybe you don’t want to interact. But what about the online version?

Kids and young people’s TV does invite comment and involvement. Watched What Now recently? Imagine if you could be part of the news? The BBC have.

So, quickly before I lose it again, I’d better post version 2 of my post.

The USB Key / flash drive / memory stick / happy stick (tm Jules) is just about de rigueur for all computer users now. They have taken over from floppy disks for file storage because of their size, speed and memory space.

My first flash drive held a staggering eight megabytes of stuff. What am I saying. It still does. It’s around here somewhere!

These days I use a couple of Data Travellers from Kingston (64MB and 256MB) for everyday storage. The 64MB is a backup of my most important work files and the great thing is that I can swap it between my Pc and my Mac and have the data available in a flash (bad pun). I also use a couple of Kingston SD cards (512MB and 1Gb) and a small USB card reader to move files between my computers and my iPaq.

We gave USB keys to every teacher in our ICT cluster. It seemed like a good way for them to transport and store important files and data.

I’m noticing a bit of chatter around the net about must have programmes for your USB key. It’s possible to run a complete Office setup and a browser and PIM from a key. There is plenty of information about that here.

I blogged about this back in June – so from my dead blog – here are the links:

Portable Firefox

Portable Thunderbird

Portable Sunbird

Portable Nvu

Portable Open Office

This could be a useful way for some people to use decent software where ever they are.

This is a test post. I’ve used the Mac to upload a photo I took of Ben at Muriwai Beach. Here’s hoping that you get to see this photo of the boy! I have a few decent photos and I’d rather like to use them in this the second incarnation of Tangled up in Purple.

UPDATE: It worked. And the text flows nicely around the image as you can see. Ain’t CSS great? Now if only I could get the CSS sorted for by sidebar I’d be happy

And my new design. Currently it’s Coffee Cup from Zenith. It’s got the left hand side bar and seems to be easy to customise. Here’s hoping!
