I have been thinking about Artichoke’s post “Forget the damned motor car and build the cities for lovers and friends” about designing learning environments. When I am at home, I generally work from a squishy leather couch surrounded by lots of mess. If I have an important task I try to sit at a table and work but in the main that doesn’t offer me the comfort that I want. There are lots of office spaces in this house – but again, this is the space that works for me.

Many years ago, when daughter number two was in either year two or three, I went to pick her up for an appointment. She wasn’t sitting at her desk writing like most of the rest of the class. She was under the teacher’s desk with her best friend. But she was writing. I asked why she was under there and was firmly told that this was her writing place. Who was I to argue?
